Some Shapes
60 cm * 90 cm
Acrylic Paint on Canvas
December 2019
With a constructed 60 cm * 90 cm canvas, the piece, Some Shapes, reveals my apathy over the people around me and my exploration over the unexplainable. It is inspired the art movement, Supremacism, and its founding artist, Kazimir Malevich.

The Art Movement I was inspired by for this project was the Supremacism. the Art movement. The Suprematism Art Movement was according to the text, ("The defining attributes of Suprematism") are straightforward geometrical shapes and limited number of colours'. The purpose of this art work was to been to be essentially meaningless, as the the assembly and order of the shapes was meant to throw off viewers. According to ("Supremacist Composition") The term itself refers to the 'supremacy' of artistic feeling rather than an actual representation of real-life objects or scenery." The art movement, although short-lived, because of being banned in Russia due to Stalinism. The censorship was banned due to abstractness and purposeness, suggesting that its purpose was to annoy the viewer.
An attribute in the art movement was the composition. The shapes in general were painted cleanly, and fully. The shapes were aligned that they did not make an shape, however, as they were meant to be abstract. Another feature of the composition was its color scheme. In his piece, Malevich was known to limit his color chooses to a simple shape. In this case, Malevich restricted himself to only a colors, namely black, blue, yellow and red. At time, he used more colors, but in general Malevich stuck to this scheme. For this project, I was more interested in the shapes rather than the colors. I want to create the circle, as it is the few opportunities I am able to do so. i was also interested in using a few colors like Malvich did, however, I wanted to explore using more dynamic, unmixed paint, in order to see the colors pop off the page. I also wanted to see if I could make the shapes sharper, an aspect I struggled with. |
Sketches
For the sketches, I knew that I wanted to incorporated the artist's work. For awhile, I was considering doing three rectangles for these, hence sketch 1 however I later realized that would deviate away from the other's work. I then consider sketch 2, the circles. However, I felt that this too deviated from Malevich work, as it began to focus on circles, rather than a variety of overlapping shapes, I ultimately chose this as my project.
Process/Techniques and Experimentation
I made sure choose a oint and create dots 20 cm away from it. I then connected the dots to create the shape. I also did than another time to create a different circle.
In order to diverse the shapes I had, I made sure to add some triangles, again utilizing the math necessary to do to. I also made some squared with the help of 2 30cm long rules to help create the 90 degree angles necessary to do to make a start.
|
After I finished making my shapes, I then used my Apple Barrell Bright Red Paint for the circles. I used Pavement Black for triangles, Cobalt blue for the Squares and Christmas Green for the rectangles.
|
While I was painting, I noticed that the Malevich used solid colors in his shapes, an aspect I replicated as I painted the circles. As I was painting, I noticed that painting with my 3/4" brush then it was for my thiner brush. I also noticed that it was best that I added a second layer of paint onto the canvas

I regret using my smaller brushes here.
|
After I finished the painting the shapes, I used my 3/4" brush Apple Barrel's Country Grey Paint and painted the background. I knew I wanted a light colored background to mimic Malevich's work. I chose grey over white because I felt that the white will be too harsh against the colors. After I painted, I noticed that the colors seemed to thin, so I added an additional layer of paint onto the shapes and onto the background.

Experimentation (Color Swatches)
For this piece, I wanted to know how the colors would look against the gray, as I never really had a background color like that. So after painting a layer of grey painting onto some sketchbook paper, I later decided should swatch the paint. I put some paint onto the grey paint and I noticed I favored Green Red Black and Blue over the others because they seemed to pop more than the other colors. I did this so that now I know that I should use these colors onto the canvas.

Reflection
For this project, I focused on abstractness, without a particular message, something I never did before. While I did appreciated how the that the pieces did resemble Malvich's piece, I found it difficult to paint the grey layer last. That caused a lot of my pieces to not look as shape as they were before the printing. After completing this piece, I can definitely say that I felt a lot better and believe this piece convey a lot about the abstract art of the aesthetically pleasing yet unexplainable. I appreciate the color choice in general, however, I wish i had not ran out of white paint so that I could paint more. For a first time, I think this peace was a well done piece. However, my greatest struggle in the piece was making the paint as SOLID as a possible. I noticed that especially with the grey paint required several layers to cover completely and I found it hard to make the background less solid. Even after adding layers after layer, it was hard to make the piece solid. On the bright side, I can definitely say that there was an improvement of my work. I am glad to know that I could use mathematics in art, which help improved the best craftsmanship. After comparing the pieces, I do believe I did better when it came to the shapes, the composition was more simplest than Malvich. My color values also seemed more dramatic than Malvich's as well as I used dark colors while he used rather simplest colors. Upon further reflection, I can visibly see the slight changed in elements like color, compostion and values from Malvich. Overall, I believe this piece was a piece well-done.
ACT Response Questions
Clearly explain how you are able to identify the cause effect relationship between your inspiration and its effect on your artwork?
Malvich's use of abstract shape and his varerityof shapes is directly seen into my piece.
What is the overall approach the author has regarding the topic of your inspiration?
The authors approached the topic in analytic way, while including inspirations each other had.
What kind of generalizations and conclusions have you discovered about people, ideas, culture, etc. while you researched your inspiration?
I noticed that it annoys people (and even Goverments) when Art is not what they want it to be.
What is the central idea or theme around your inspirational research?
The central theme around my research was to find a artist that focused on abstract art and supremism.
What kind of inferences did you make while reading your research?
Throughout my research I inferred that art movements can happen simultaneously, since Supremisesm was inspired by both Cubiism and Futurism.
